  1. To the Rev. Peter Sheasby, and the ladies who attended the memorial for my mother, Margorie A. Wentzel, I wish to thank you all sincerely.
She spoken often of the church; the services, the various events and the kindness shown to her. We are so sorry that we were not able to attend your coffee club this morning for the brief memorial and to meet many of you.
We would like to send a donation to the church, but as we live in Florida, U.S.A., we are not sure how best to do this and look forward to your advise.

    Dear Revd. Sheasby,

    I am writing from Lincoln

This is just a little enquiry about the Shaw family who once lived in Retford.

They were originally based in North Wheatley, where Horace Shaw, the head of the household, ran the Sun Inn.

But, when he died, in 1940, his widow, Lucy Alice Shaw moved with the children – the ones who had not married and left home – to a little terraced house at 3, Beehive Street.

Among the children were a son, Edgar Shaw, who remained in Retford, and did whatever work he could find locally. And, also, two daughters, who never married, Gertrude, who was lame, after a fall, at birth and Lucy Alice Shaw, who was a hairdresser (with the same name as her mother).

Lucy Alice Shaw (senior) died in 1950. Edgar died in March, 1963, Gertrude died just after Christmas, in 1964 and Lucy Alice (junior) died just before Christmas, in 1966.

It seems that Gertrude and Edgar lived on in the house at 3, Beehive Street, after their mother, Lucy Alice Shaw (senior) had died, while Lucy Alice Shaw (junior) went to live at 22 Woodlands. And Gertrude and Edgar were joined by another sister, Ethel who had married a butcher from North Wheatley, called Frank Hawksworth.

Ethel Hawksworth died in March 1963, while Frank Hawksworth lived in Hillcrest, at 1 Leverton Road, either a care home or hospital, before he died in August, 1964.

My question is: would anyone in any of your congregations, an older member perhaps, remember any of these family members. I am trying, with difficulty, to piece together the history of this family, so that I might write a little piece on them. I would be happy to send some pictures, either by post or regular email.

    Thank you.

    With best wishes,

    David Jeffreys

      Dear David,

The address Hillcrest, 1 Leverton Road brought me here. Your information that Hillcrest was either a care home or hospital before August 1964 surprised me. I am also trying to piece together the history of a family member. This family member of mine is Martin Coleman (Retired Collier) died 2 Sep 1966 aged 77 at this address. Martin Coleman’s death was registerd by A.J.J. Morley who was the occupier of Hillcrest. I had falsely thought that Martin Coleman was a lodger in Hillcrest. Are there records for Hillcrest that can be accessed for additional information?

      With kind regards,

        Dear Charles,

I have only just seen your email thanks to Julie Coates. The short answer is that l don’t know. But if I ever manage to get back onto the internet properly, l will try to get back to you about this,, if l can.

        With kind regards,

    Dear Revd Sheasby,

One little thing I wished to add to the information I wrote on the Shaw Family , was that I believe the children were baptised into the Congregational Church, which I believe was once situated in Carolgate. I understand that this Church eventually merged with the United Reformed Church, but that it has since closed down.

I am quite happy for you to circulate my email to anyone you think might possibly know something about this family.

    Thank you.

    With best wishes,
